On the Streets of Brisbane - With a Mirrorless Camera

Im on the transition from DSLR to a Mirrorless system - In particular the Canon R5. So many pros and cons on both sides but for me the winners are way better video, amazing focus, eye tracking, lighter body and stabilisation for both stills and video. Shooting lots of commuter movement in the Queen Street Mall gave me a chance to test all the different focus modes. So many choices it’s going to take some time to have it all tucked away in my muscle memory. I shot at f1.8 so had very little latitude and nailed about 80% focus on eyes in very low light - something I would rarely achieve with my DSLR system.

The future is looking bright and in focus…yeh

Looking Back - Singapore

A few years ago I jumped on a plane to Singapore with a couple of cameras a bag of clothes and no plan….

Well I sort of had a plan to wander the streets collecting images for my architecture portfolio and sample the delicious street food.

Six years on I had a quick look through some of the images today - did a speed select and RAW file process to throw them up on my blog…

No order or theme - just a bunch of images that get my tick.

Waltzing Matilda Centre - Winton

I have lost count of the number of times I have traveled to Winton over the past 20 years and it has become one of my favourite drives out west. A quick right then a left from home, hit the Flinders Highway and keep heading towards the setting sun for the rest of the day. It’s the flat endless horizon and massive sky that touches my soul every time. After recent rain it becomes a green oasis but for most of the year the country out there brown, dry and dusty for as far as you can see.

In June 2015 the original Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton burnt down due to an electrical fault in the storeroom. The centre had been a major drawcard since 1998 for thousands of “grey nomads” to the little town in Western Queensland during the winter months. It has since been rebuilt with design by Cox Architecture and wayfinding by DotDash. I was commissioned by DotDash to capture the wayfinding elements along with the local environment. Clearly the building design and typography have cleverly taken inspiration from the local environment and pioneering spirit so prevalent throughout this great southern land.

Museum of Tropical Queensland

20 years since construction the Museum of Tropical Queensland was in need of some tender loving care. Steel works on the roof were replaced along with a new curved ceiling, new galleries and refurbishment to the entrance and shop. I was commissioned by Counterpoint Architecture and Qbuild to capture these images. Thankfully I was blessed with some good weather and plenty of time to scout the location and make several trips at various times of the day for photography.
